By Admin on Friday, July 18, 2003 - 9:53 pm:I've had requests asking about Steiner schools. These would be private schools and there are not that many of them. However here is a short list sent to me by Mrs. Ondine Antonini. These would be schools teaching in Japanese. By Admin on Saturday, July 19, 2003 - 1:13 am: The email address above for the Pacific International School (fwiv8158[at]mb.nifty.com) is no longer valid. If anyone calls there please let us know the details! I'm in the USA and can't make these phone calls so easily.
By Admin on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 - 5:40 am:A small Waldorf Steiner school has opened for ages about 3-7 in Takanawa, Minato-ku, Tokyo (7 minutes from Shinagawa JR station). Curriculum is English only, but some staff speak Japanese. Start date September 2004. In terms of adherence to Steiner principles, this school might be measured at "medium" (sort of a scale referred to on web sites in the USA). The school is also accepting students with special learning needs. There is a special teacher just for this purpose. This school is being started by Ms. Toku Nagashima of Harvey MacLaurin School with support from Ms. Nikki Sanders (active in Steiner schools in Michigan for more than 20 years) and others. For more information you can contact the school at 03-5791-1435. Email address is: meg[at]po.iijnet.or.jp
By Admin on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 2:26 pm:This just came in regarding the Waldorf Steiner school in Mitaka (to move to Fujino which has local train service only). Please note that the word "accredited" means something different here than it would in the USA or Canada. This type of "accredited" is a government paperwork formality, and not an extensive review by members of peer institutions. ____________ The first accredited Waldorf School in Japan to be born. School open day of Tokyo Steiner Schule (Rudolf Steiner School Tokyo). NPO Tokyo Steiner Schule (Rudolf Steiner School Tokyo - 128 students, 22 teaching staff. - 1st to 9th grade. - Mitaka-shi Tokyo - has been existed as a non-accredited school to perform Waldorf education. Under policy of the education as art. We submitted an application for an accredited private school to Kanagawa pref. (the school is moving to Fujino township next spring). Our application has just accepted supported by the Koizumi cabinet's deregulation program called Kozo Kaikaku Tokku which allows school to be established without owning their own land and/or buildings as well as unstandardized curriculum. We are holding "School Open Day" on this Sunday 31 Oct. from 10:00am to 2pm at 4-2-22 Mure, Mitaka-shi, Tokyo. 20 min. walk from Inokashira koen station on Inogashira line. http://www.steiner-schule.or.jp/pub/newmap.jpg Exhibition *Main lesson book *Hand Crafts *Paintings Cafeteria by the upper grade students Information booth Stationary shop Etc. Press representatives are welcomed on the previous day 9:30am – 10:30am 31st Oct. Photo shooting is permitted only at this time. For details; Fax: 0422-41-0506 (24Hrs). By Amy Uehara on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 10:22 pm: This location is 4 minutes from my home in Fujino. My children would have attended school in the same building had they not homeschooled instead. Fujino is a 90-minute ride from Shinjuku. It is a beautiful but inconvenient location. There are no public buses from the station. The school will likely have a shuttle bus (and if we are lucky, the locals can hitch a ride to the station!!!) Otherwise, it is a good 30-40 minute walk down, up,up,up and then down from Fujino Station on the Chuo Honsen, 2 stops past Takao.
By Steve K on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 1:12 pm:Go to http://www2.gol.com/users/nhavens/index.html for more information on Fujino township.
By Norm Havens on Thursday, December 9, 2004 - 12:31 am:Hey, Amy! What trains've you been riding? It's only 59 minutes if you take the *Chuo Tokkai* -- But you're certainly right about the "up-down" part ~o~ Norm By Admin on Thursday, December 9, 2004 - 02:46 pm: For those who don't know, the "Tokkai" is the fastest express train from Tokyo station to Takao station. I think only some of the "Tokkai" trains go through to Fujino. Does anyone know? By Norm Havens on Thursday, December 9, 2004 - 03:12 pm: You're correct; only a limited number of the Chuo Tokubetsu Kaisoku (aka Tokkai) continue past Takao. Most of the Tokkai that stop in Fujino have final destinations of either Otsuki or Kawaguchiko. Otherwise, you take the ordinary (kaisoku) JR Chuo line or Keio Line to Takao, and transfer to the Chuo Honsen.
