Travel Agents
By me on Thursday, April 22, 1999 - 12:39 am: We are a gaijin family of 5 and we have found that having a family holiday in Japan (say 1-2 weeks at a seaside resort or town) can be VERY expensive. So now we are considering holidays overseas instead. I have been gathering information on airfares from discount travel agents, but none of them want to sell a packaged (airfare & accom) holiday. They refer you to the mainstream Japanese travel agents who dont discount their tickets as much and only have brouchures in Japanese. My questions is...Can anyone recommend an English speaking travel agent that will put together or sell a package holiday USING discount airfares? Tks
By Cheryl on Thursday, December 20, 2001 - 9:53 am: Sweet Travel is Bankrupt If you or anyone you know got a super-cheapo discount ticket in Tokyo to whereever this holiday (1/2 what you normally pay), PLEASE call and make sure they haven't gone bankrupt!! Try to call during hours they should be open! Sarah and I arrived at the airport on Saturday to find that Sweet Travel in Tokyo went belly-up a week back and therefore the airline still had our reservation BUT had never been paid for the ticket and therefore wouldn't give us our tickets! We were given only one option.... buy a NEW, FULL-PRICE ticket for 238,000 yen (which they later discounted down to 110,000). Be careful!! Make sure your ticket agent is licenced (you'll see their IATA number somewhere on your voucher). Happy holidays!
By Kate S. on Thursday, December 20, 2001 - 2:22 pm:"My friend is trying to get a flight from Washington, DC to Tokyo and home again around New Year's. I know from living in the US that Japanese travel agencies usually have the best deals, but I can only remember H.I.S. Travel. Does anyone know of any other Japanese travel agencies in the US? We've been surfing the net, of course, but I can't seem to find Japanese agencies on-line. Thanks!" -------------------- On-line travel agent: Let me recommend http://www.sky-tours.com They search through all the different airlines for you. it seems pretty reasonable price-wise to me and you can pay in any currency you like. They send you the IATA-labelled tickets by FedEx within a week or so.
By Suzy on Sunday, December 23, 2001 - 9:46 am: Australia to Japan You can book tickets online at www.statravel.com.au Despite the fact that the name refers to students, they do offer fares for everyone and they often seem to have good deals. Just in case it might be useful to anyone else.. STA sells two great fares with JAL (from Australia), one to London and one to Vancouver, both for about the same prices as a roundtrip to Tokyo. You can stopover (with no time limit, although the ticket is only valid for a year) in Japan in both directions, so I essentially live in Tokyo on "stopover" and get an "almost free" trip to London or Vancouver. I am about to go home to Sydney for 5 days on the last leg of a Syd-London rtn and I have bought (online) a Syd-Vancouver rtn which will get me back to Tokyo, then over to visit my sister in Canada in May, back to Tokyo again, and then to Australia in October for my brother's wedding... all on the same ticket for the bargain price of $1299 AUD ($700USD?). I paid by making an internet transfer from my bank account in Australia but you can also pay by credit card (with a 2.2% charge). They will post the tickets to an Australian address for an extra $5 or they will deliver it to any one of their offices.

By Cornelia on Thursday, January 31, 2002 - 10:40 am:I can't even count all the tickets I've bought from these folks over the last 5 years. They have almost the lowest if not always the lowest fares. I have had trouble once or twice with a less experienced staff person giving me wrong terminal information or some such detail, but no problems with the tickets. I don't know about elsewhere. H.I.S. Travel in Sendai next to the station has received recommendations and also has English speaking agents. http://www.his-j.com/ H.I.S. Travel -- Niigata (025) 243-6531 No1 Travel is actually owned by H.I.S. or a separate company owned by the same man who owns H.I.S., Hideo Sawada (also started Skymark Airlines).
By Natasha on Sunday, October 6, 2002 - 2:36 am:JTB has an English page and they also have offices in North America. Here is the link for searching for cheap tix from USA to Japan or vice versa. Their search does not include all airlines but might be useful to for ballparking current prices. http://www.jtbusa.com/enhome/tickettop.asp
