UV Block swimwear/beachwear?

Japan With Kids - Forums: Shopping in Japan: UV Block swimwear/beachwear?
By Erin Siddall on Thursday, June 2, 2005 - 8:25 am:

Does anyone know where/if possible to buy UV block beachwear/fullbody swimwear for toddlers in Tokyo?

Going to Okinawa soon. This kind of swimwear looks like a fullbody thin skinsuit. Have seen this is in California and Australia.

Have seen them at Costo over the last few summers though I haven't really checked recently. They were not the fullbody type but just the tops.

I've seen children's ones (full-body one piece and two-piece) in various department stores (eg Seibu Ikebukuro, though I can't remember if it was in the sports wear section or on the children's floor) and even at Akachan Honpo in previous summers. I haven't looked this year, though. Costco would be much cheaper, but the time I saw them there they only had sizes for older kids/adults, not babies and toddlers, and it was only the tops, as mentioned above.

For the past two years, I've
bought full-body UV protection
swimsuits through Tokyo American
Club. They've had a wide
variety of sizes, to fit boys
and girls from about 2 to 10
years old. You could ask at the
pool area, or get a friend to
dash in and see if they're still
selling them; they ran about
3,500 yen, about half the price
of similar ones I saw in the
department stores. Good luck
and have a great time at the
beach!

Toys R Us - I was just at Toys R Us in Ikebukuro this afternoon (basement of Sunshine City) and spotted a whole rail of baby/toddler sized UV-block swim outfits, some one-piece, some two-piece, in the children's clothes section which is in a separate shop just to the right of the entrance to the main Toys R Us store. They all cost under Y2,000, and there was quite a range of colours. Sizes were about 90cm/100cm/110cm, I think. I always buy these things a size or two too big so they are not such a struggle to get on over wriggly toddler's heads.

Wow, Bethan's find is
undoubtedly as good as it gets
in Tokyo (short of second
hand).

If you feel like shopping online,
though, here are a few sites
that offer UV suits and
accessories; the prices are
higher, but all ship abroad and
since it's a light item, the
mailing isn't super costly.

www.kids-kaper.co.uk
pricey, but great selection and
sharp designs.

www.alexandme.com
Pretty basic suits, US based
company.

www.lioninthesun.com
babysuits in cute stripes and
made with a high percentage
of cotton, so they feel softer. I
think they offer suits that snap
up the front, too, for quick
diaper changes.

www.sunsmart.ca
not my taste personally, but
they have UV monitor
wristbands and suits that
include pictures that change
as the sun intensifies--sort of
educational!

Maybe if people post more
sites and tips, the sun will get
the idea it's safe to come out
and play!

Thanks to everyone for all the info!!
I think I will get one in Toys R US for now... and maybe order a bigger online to US address for next year (always cheaper shipping).
