Hello. Does anyone know of a good gynecologist in the Fujisawa, Chigasaki, Hiratsuka area (West Kanagawa)? My wife is 6 months pregnant and has had bleeding several times. We are looking for a second informed opinion. Thanks.

For peace of mind I would suggest you make the trip into Tokyo to one of the specialist foreign clinics or hospitals. The British Clinic is very good, but a normal consul is approx Y10,000. They dont accept Japanese Health Insurance.

I agree with M&J to come to Tokyo. I've delivered two babies in Tokyo and I had some bleeding as well. I would highly recommend Dr. Sakamoto at the Tokyo Surgical and Medical Clinic (right across from Tokyo Tower) 03-3436-3028. He is only available there on Mondays and Saturdays by appt only. No Japanese Health Insurance accepted. He also has a clinic at Nihon University that accepts Japanese Health Insurance but I've never been there. If you speak Japanese call (03)3972-8111 ext. 2522-3 (no appts).

Don't know a good female gynocologist, but recently went to a male one who was great (my first experience here was with a female as she was absolutely awful). His name is Dr. Hirakawa and he speaks English. His clinic is in Nihonbashi and the telephone number is: 3666-4795. I found all of the staff there to be very friendly and helpful. He had a lovely bed side manner and I would recommend him to anyone.

Last year I visited the Takeshitas for spotting (I'm postmenopausal) and had a complete exam as I hadn't had one in years. I was very pleased with both of them, with their facilities and checkup, and their location. And they do take health insurance.

Both of them (a married couple in their 60's) are gynecologists, and most or all of their grown children are doctors or researchers in various aspects of reproductive medicine. I was examined by Toshiko (Mrs.) but interviewed and
given the results by Fumio (Mr.) as his English is pretty darn good and she is less confident though in fact understands quite well for the purpose.

Although their clinic near Takadanobaba Station ( JR Yamanote and subway Tozai lines) always seems busy (i.e., full waiting room), on first phoning them I got an appointment for a few days later (my complaint not being urgent), with a follow up a week later.

They are open on Saturdays as well. Come to think of it, though, I think the woman doctor's hours are more limited than the man's, because she also goes to a hospital.

I found them both to be medically current and upbeat, factual, and used to dealing with foreigners (except for the obligatory self-deprecation about their command of English).

(By the way, I mentioned to him the Kanda Clinic, whose ad I'd seen but whose phone reception couldn't handle my English. He has a colleague there -- one of his sons ? -- but later I read on another e-list someone who had gone to Kanda and hated it.)

Can anyone recommend a good doctor/clinic for getting a pap smear done? English speaking and pref. (but not ess) a woman doctor. I know I shouldn't be embarrassed about this stuff, but I just can't face the local assembly line type clinic...

Last year, I had my pap smear test. I will strongly recommend Tokyo Surgical Clinic, Kamiyacho (Just opp Tokyo Tower). The doctor is a French lady, who speaks perfect English and also a very good Doctor. I felt very comfortable. Her name is Dr.Claudine Bliah. The only thing is the clinic does not accept the usual National Insurance, so you will have to pay for the whole thing. It turned out to be quite a bit expensive. The rest is really.. good, very happy with it.

You can also see Dr. Bliah at Aiiku Hospital where you can use medical insurance (check to see what days/times she comes in). She charges a consultation fee of 5,000 yen. If you don't mind a male doctor, Dr. Takeda speaks good English and is very nice.

I went to the Takeshita Clinic in Takadanobaba, and here is my experience:
It is located on a side street parallel to Waseda-dori and was quite close to Takadanobaba station. Easy to find.

Oops. I forgot to remove my boots in the genkan. I am used to going to the hospital for my daughter where you can just walk in without removing shoes. You'd think I'd be on top of these differences by now!

Two doctors, husband and wife team. Wife did the examination and the paps smear. This was painful for me. I couldn't see what was happening but something was clipped on somewhere inside and then left dangling for a little bit. I have a traditionally sensitive cervix, and I was not reassured by no answer to my question "what is that?"

But it was all over very quickly. My samples for chlamydia and papsmear were sent off to a lab. Husband did the post-exam consultation, perhaps they feel his English is the better of the two. I was asked to return in a week, but I called instead and Mrs. Doctor told me the results over the telephone, all negative so all OK.

The total charges were about Y20,000 and I paid my share as ordained by NHI (30%) as I left. Overall, not great but not bad either. Got the job done. In and out in 45 minutes. English not smooth at all, but workable.

Just to add to Jenny's message: the lack of privacy at Takeshita and other similar type clinics can be annoying. As doctor checks you, other staff walk around, see you and hear every word of your conversation. Not the ideal environment...

Actually the privacy at Takeshita was pretty good. Unlike a hospital it just isn't big and crowded. There are only 3 patient rooms and they are larger than the cubicles typical at a hospital. Only one is used for gyn examination. While I was there only one other patient was in the waiting room. Total number of staff was 3!

Dr. Sakamoto at the Tokyo Surgical and Medical Clinic (right across from Tokyo Tower) 03-3436-3028. He now delivers at Sanno and Aiiku from what I hear although he prefers Seibo. He is very good, certified here and in the US, speaks perfect English.

After having my baby at Seibo, I can thoroughly recommend their services (I posted above outlining the differences between Seibo and Aiiku)

I never saw my doctor during the delivery but the midwives were truly excellent. Husbands are allowed to stay with wives for the delivery and in general they are open to birth plan requests. They are pro-breastfeeding.

The doctor I started with, Dr Ohshiba, moved to Sanno, so if you choose to go to Sanno, ask for her.

Two years back i had a complication and lost my babies (they were twins), and the doctor warned me to not to have a baby for at least 1 to 2 years, now my doctors timing is over and i want to have a baby. I lived in Chiba for over 10 years and I don't recall the mention of any English speaking gynacologist. Although, there is a very large and modern training hospital between Narita and Abiko. It's called 'Nippon Medical School'. Some English is spoken there.

I always traveled to Tokyo for English access to anything medical. I'd go to the 'Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinc'. Their website is http://www.tmsc.jp/

I'd also recommend Dr Bliah. She works at the above but also does gynnie from the (pretty state of the art) 'Aiiku Hospital'. This hospital is focused on women and babies only. You'll find a map on their website at http://www.aiiku-hos.or.jp/en/entrance.html

you might have heard of Toho Women's Clinic in Kiba. It is very close to my place. I know they are about to open a bigger facility just next to their existing clinic. I know that they have not stopped consulting in the meanwhile.

it might be close for you if you take a train up to the next stop of shin-kiba. and a taxi. closer that way. and if you are able to you could take a bus from shin-kiba to come to kiba station on tozai line. it is just across the street from ext 1 of kiba stn. if you do end up going there pl. tell us what do you think of it.

I can't recommand a good gynecologist yet but I can tell you that I had a very bad experience at Kanda 2nd Clinic with Dr Sayoko Makabe.
I might have come on a bad day but after 1/2 hour wait she received me while another person was in the room. She answered 3 phone calls so could not take care of me. After 10 minutes she finally tells me to wait outside again.
Then 5 minutes later I am sent to another room where I'm asked to take my clothes off. I wait there 10 MINUTES! She finally comes back and examines me in 3 minutes.
I came to have my pills changed but she did not ask me why. She just said that I still had one pack so I should come back in a month.
I have to say this was an extremely unpleasant situation and if I was expecting a baby I would definately not go to such an unprofessional clinic.
I heard Tokyo clinic was good though.

Regarding the Ladies Clinic at Shin Kiba, I would request you to conduct your research before going there. I dont have personal experience but a few of my friends had bad experience at this cilinc. The doctor was not forthcoming with the patient about the treatment being done and did not convey to the patient when the treament went wrong, and they were charged for services they did not avail of.
