Kawasaki Disease Info

To all parents;
We just went through a rather frightening experience last week: our 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed as having Kawasaki Disease ("Kawasaki Byo"), and was hospitalized for one week to receive treatment.
While the disease is not necessarily fatal, it is considered, along with rheumatic fever, one of the leading causes of acquired heart disease in children under age 5 in the U.S. Without immediate treatment, aneurysms may form, with the risk of heart attack and permanent heart damage.
We were fortunate that our pediatrician, Dr. Michiko Suwa, was able to quickly diagnose the illness and send us to Red Cross Hospital, where their pediatric cardiologists were able to confirm that she was in the early stages of the disease. Treatment is simple: a course of gammaglobulins and aspirin.
Luckily our daughter is recovering slowly, with no sign of heart damage thus far.
Kawasaki Disease was first identified by Dr. Kawasaki at Red Cross Hospital in the sixties, and the staff and hospital are considered the primary center for resources and KD care in Japan.
The etiology of this disease is still completely unknown, but it seems to be much more common in Japan than in the West -- the other issue, of course, is that it is generally misdiagnosed in the U.S. and cases seem to be under-reported.
We were lucky to be able to tap the internet immediately after diagnosis for more detailed info, and I have provided just one of many web resources here FYI and awareness: it's important to be aware of the symptoms (including high fever & rash) which mimic some other less serious illnessess.

If there are any other parents whose children are recovering from KD here in Japan, I'd like to hear from you!
