Do any of you use general practitioners? When I get sick, I have been calling the hospitals and asking if the doctor that specializes in whatever problem I have is on duty. I'd rather see someone who treats me as a whole person instead of an ear infection, broken rib, UTI or whatever. Are there GPs in Tokyo? How do you find them?

Dr. King is pretty popular. He speaks English like an American native speaker (graduated from St. Mary's) and has good bedside manner. His office is located a the intersection of Meiji and Harajuku streets in Harajuku/Jingomae area. GAP, La Foret, Jonathan's, Condomania are all on the same intersection. His practice is like a GP's office except that he does no gynecological exams. tel: 03-3409-0764

I'll second Sandy's recommendation of Dr. King. He's gentle and calm and doesn't 'talk down' to his patients. He doesn't hesitate to get out the textbooks and show you diagrams and photos. He's also not a rampant medicine prescriber.

One other great thing about Dr. King is that he accepts Japanese National Health Insurance.

I learned a neat trick from Dr. King last Thursday regarding x-rays. If one wants to keep a record/"copy" but is not allowed to keep the x-ray, one can take a prety good picture of the x-ray with a digital camera when it is displayed. Just make sure the flash is turned off! And remember to bring your camera with you.

Does anyone know any Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctors in Tokyo?

I used to see western doctors. But after my family moved to Shanghai 3 year ago, I started seeing TCM doctors when I was ill and got dragged for a long period of time even I have seen a western doctor several times. I got pneumonia in Jan 2005. After taking 4 weeks antibiotics and a series of blood tests, the doctor said I was recovered. But I could feel that there's still something wrong with me. In two weeks time, I got Laryngitis again and had to take another course of antibiotics. After all these medicine, I got insomnia and sever headache Then I decided to see a TCM doctor. She told me that my "heat" is very serious and after taking about a month herbal medicine, my insomnia and headache were gone. Since then I felt much better in the following months.

I really hope I can attach to a TCM doctor in Tokyo after I arrive in March.
