Japan With Kids - Forums: Playgroups and Pals: Tokyo Family Network

By T.F.N. on Wednesday, May 26, 1999 - 3:38 pm:

Tokyo Family Network: A free service which helps newcomers and existing residents meet others with common interests and needs (e.g., playgroups). Puts you in contact with other families in your neighborhood and offers local information. Call 3715-3240

We recently arrived in the Tsurumaki area with our 2 year old son. We can take the Bus to the Fukazawa Area. Does anybody know about any play groups in either of these areas.

Also, I tried the Tokyo Family Network number listed above and have never gotten an answer, do they still exisit?

Re:Tokyo Family Network

I've also been trying for a couple of months to contact Tokyo Family Network . . . is the 3715-3240 tel.no longer valid? Are they still in operation?

I have been trying to track down the Tokyo Family Network thing since before Christmas. I went to the original founder, who is no longer involved, and he said he thinks it is defunct but he would try to pin it down more precisely. So still waiting on an answer.

By the way, it would be wise to at least include an email address in announcements looking for people to join in play groups. To post such an announcement anonymously or without any means of direct contact could come across as strange or insincere, and is unlikely to draw any responses. Well, I am speaking only for myself, but my reaction is sort of along the lines that if you don't trust me with your name or email address, then why would I trust you with mine?

We have all heard stories about little robots sifting through the millions of web sites and building huge data bases of email addresses to be sold for junk mail purposes. But I also think the plus sides of using the Internet for communication and networking far outweigh the down side of receiving junk mail. And, beyond junk mail, I can't see any other serious downside. So I'm a bit puzzled as to why some families are trying to reach out to other families anonymously?
