Bringing a domestic helper to Japan

Japan With Kids - Forums: Moving to and Leaving Japan: Moving To Japan: Bringing a domestic helper to Japan
By Lesley Anton on Monday, May 14, 2007 - 5:08 pm:

We are looking at bringing our wonderful helper, who has been with us for some years, with us to Tokyo from Singapore. We have determined all the legal requirements etc, however for these two questions I need some opinions: 1. In Singapore, maids/helpers are required to live with you. We would like to give her a bit more independence than living under our roof all the time by offering her the option of living out (after an undetermined period of time living with us to help her acclimatise). Do you know if there's any law or legal requirement for sponsored helpers to live with you for a specified period of time from the day they arrive in Japan?
2. Is anyone able to shed some light on the cost for domestic helpers who live out and where, typically do they live, how and what it might cost them? We're just trying to do a cost/benefit analysis for our helper to see if this makes sense for her future, which is also important to us.
Thanks.
