Clothing (Cleaning, Alterations, Storage)

Japan With Kids - Forums: Repairs and Maintenance: Clothing (Cleaning, Alterations, Storage)
By Lynn Chen on Thursday, December 5, 2002 - 12:14 pm:

Can someone recommend a good place for simple alterations (length of pants, taking in waist, etc.) that won't charge an arm and a leg? I had my jacket sleeves shortened a bit at a dry cleaner and was charged 3500yen! I don't mind paying a little more for high quality work, but nothing ridiculous. I live in Aoyama, but anywhere in Shibuya or Shinjuku will be fine. Or does anyone know someone who does this on the side?

There are shops that are called "reform" or "fuku no reform"? Anyway, they may or may not be cheaper. They often run good deals on standard things like hemming pants' legs, but then fancy stuff like putting in a new lining in a coat is quite expensive. Sometimes one of their flyers shows up in my mailbox. Some of these places even can re-weave holes made by moths during summer storage of wools (but that runs about Y3500 yen per 4mm squared).

I often just ask at the local koban (police box), or better yet, the tobaco shop lady across the street (who doesn't seem to mind that I never buy cigarettes but always ask a lot of questions). She seems to know everything, but of course she does not speak English.

I know two clothing 'reform' shops near where I live (one is at the south exit of Otsuka station, Yamanote line). But these are not near your neighborhood.

I am looking for a dressmaker to run up a simple skirt.
Perhaps your Filipina helper would like to earn some extra money? or can anyone recommend a reasonably priced place.
Any areas considered but prefer Toshima or Bunkyo-ku or nearby to these.
Please email to julielrogers[at]

Does anyone know if there is a fur coat storage service in the Tokyo/Yokohama area? Better still, does anyone know the best place to try and sell a fur coat?

By Cornelia on Monday, November 24, 2003 - 10:00 am:

Hi Julie,
Evelyn 03-5940-2950 (after about 7 pm).
She makes clothes. I have no idea how much she would charge, but I know that the Ambassador's wife just paid her Y5100 (?) to make a dress for her daughter.
She is located in close to Myogadani station (Bunkyo-ku).

I am looking for a shop that fixes leather wear, like belts and jackets that need new zippers, seams resewn, etc. The regular tailor we've tried doesn't really do a good job, his thread is too thin and it rips within just a few days. Does anyone have any suggestions?

By Nancy on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 4:34 pm:

When I needed a repair to a knapsack, which also used heavy thread, I went to a shoe repair shop. (Mister Minit) Perhaps this will work for you as well.

I'm looking for a place that stores wedding dresses in the Suginami-ku area (Hamadayama, Eifuku, Shibuya). Does anyone know of one?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a wool coat repaired, it has a small hole/tear in it, it was brand new and since I am far too fat for all the skinny japanese clothes I could really do with getting it fixed. I live in Aoyama, Also I dont speak any japanese yet, so if anyone knows any english speaking repair shops that be great otherwise I will hopefully be able to muddle through with the handy vocab list!
Thanks in advance
