My husband and I, along with our two year old daughter, will be moving to Tokyo in a month, so I will be looking for a school for her then. Let me know!!! pam

By Yumi on Monday, November 22, 1999 - 1:27 am:

My son is planning to enter the International school from school year 2002.
He's going to the Intensive Class of the International School. Now I'm searching the Int'l Preschool in Tokyo for my son's preparing . I'd like to make my son to spend a lot of time with the English speakers.
My families are all native Japanese speakers. We can use English as a Second Language. But my son's English skill doesn't reach at the standerd level in comparison with the same age native English speakers.
If you know International Pre-school and have an information of it, please e-mail me. Now, I'm living in Meguro-ku.
Child's Play in Yoyogi-uehara, doesn't have space for 4 year old child, I've visit there already.
My son will become to 5-years-old on July 13,2000. Now he goes to nursery school where every caliculums are given in Japanese.

We're going to move to Los Angeles within 10 years on account of my husband's work.

Here is a great website which lists preschools in Tokyo.

http://www.insite-Tokyo.com/informationandlinks/children/Preschools_1.html

28 March 2000
This link is broken due to a massive site re-design at insite-Tokyo. They are now using scripts to navigate within their site, and it is no longer possible to link directly to this page.

Hi! I've posted about Int'l School in Tokyo 1 week ago.
And I got a lot of kind encouraging e-mail.Thank you a lot !!

I called some Int'l School and tried to visit. But it's difficult for the native Japanese speakers like my son to enter Int'l Preschool as soon as possible. So, I'm gonna wait until next April, because almost Japanese students will be acceptable from April - June 2000.

Anyway,I'll keep in touch . Thank you very much.

From Anne, Shibuya:
First: Thank you for providing such a great page!
I am looking for an international pre-school/nursery school for my one year old daughter, preferably in the Shibuya-area. The list with the schools was very helpful - but all the schools I called were practically for millionaires. Does any one know a nice nursery school (mornings only) that costs less than an average monthly salary? Since our daughter already has to struggle with two languages at home we do not want to expose her to a third language (Japanese) yet. I would be very greatful for any advice! Thank you, Anne

By carol fraser on Tuesday, September 26, 2000 - 8:44 am:

We are moving to Tokyo from Sydney Australia in January 2001. I am looking for an international pre-school for my 31/2 year old daughter. I have lists and other resources with contacts for preschools but there are so many. I'm looking for her to attend for 2-3 days per week. Can anyone recommend a good international pre-school that takes part-timers?
I'm also having the same problem regarding a school for my 61/2 year old daughter. The seems to be too much choice! Does anyone have any experience with the schools other than ASIJ, in particular the British School and Tokyo IS. I would be grateful for any information/ comments anyone my have(good or bad) to steer me in the right direction.Thank you, Carol

By Avril Sartori on Tuesday, October 3, 2000 - 11:01 pm:

Hello there,
I'm looking for a suitable pre-school in Tokyo, for my 16 month twins to start attending 2or3 times a week; mornings only, from next year. Most of the schools offering an English based curriculum that I've enquired about have been prohibitably expensive. Someone mentioned a reasonably priced pre-school run by one of the churches -ST Albans? I think, If anyone has any recommendations or can advise me, please mail me at aprilekuku@yahoo.com or a reply here would be great.
Thankyou Avril

We have started the "Smile International Preschool" for native English speaking and non-native English speaking preschool age children and returnees.
We provide an exciting learning environment that fosters self-esteem, encourages creativity and independence through child-centered activities.
Our native speaking teachers use English through out the day, so non-English speaking children begin learning through listening and speaking.
Since our school is a nonprofit-making organization, the tuition fee is inexpensive compared to other international schools.
We introduce a preschool curriculum from western countries.
We would like to serve the international preschool community to learn and have fun.

Hi,
I'm moving to Moto Azabu area from Hong Kong in June and looking for an international pre-school for my 16 months old son. I would like to hear any comments / advise from the parents whose children are attending one of the pre-schools in Hiroo/Azabu area.
Thanks

By Scott Hancock on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 8:15 pm:

Yukari-
Both of our children went to Sunshine Montessori Preschool which is in Moto-Azabu. We were very happy with their experience there and feel they got a great start as a result.

Wherever you consider, do visit beforehand and ask a lot of questions. Also, ask to observe a class.

Scott

By jinhee on Friday, April 20, 2001 - 9:00 pm:

Yukari,
Your son is too young for Sunshine Montessori as they don't accept children under 2 1/2. The best thing to do is visit as many schools as possible. I did and enrolled my daughter who was 18 months at ABC International School in their Stepping Stone program for 16 months to 3 years. The school is small, yet bright and cheerful. The teachers are warm and kind. The teacher student ratio is fantastic, 6 students 3 teachers. She's had a very positive experience. Willowbrook is also highly regarded as well as PAL. Sunshine is also highly regarded if you are looking for Montessori. I would visit them if you are interested in the Montessori method for your child later and put your child's name on the waitlist (I did). But as I mentioned, you really should try to visit as many of them as possible.

By kslm on Saturday, April 21, 2001 - 10:44 pm:

Yukari,
I can say only wonderful things about ABC Int'l, too. My son will be in his 2nd year next year and his younger sister attends playgroups there. Warm, caring, loving environment.

Good luck in your search!

I have a kid, 2 years old. Please suggest if there are any International pre-schools in Nakano area

By Melissa Mcnulty on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 11:29 am:

I recently went to an open day for a new international preschool opening in Kichijoji. I was really impressed by the lovely staff, creative curriculum, and warm atmosphere. The school has a range of classes from parent and child class on saturday morning for 2-3 year olds, a preschool class during the week, and a bilingual class in the afternoons. The school opens on May 7th, and the educational director is Ellen Motohashi, of Grab-Bag fame. You can find out more from her web site (www.grab-bag.net) I was also relieved to see that I didn't need to take out a second mortgage to send my daughter there!

By Adam Young on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 - 7:06 am:

I would much appreciate it if anyone would be able to provide me with personal impressions of either Nishimachi International School or New International School. I am especially interested in what people think of the Kindergarten (and under) programs.

I intend on checking out these schools myself in the near future, but I would be interested in hearing what others may have to say.

Thank you.

There is a school in Minami Azabu called the J's International School which accepts children from 2 1/2 to 6 years old. The school is open all summer for summer programs and encorages students to attend International schools like Seisen, St'Marys, AJIS etc. The School is house-setting and has a big classroom with a children's cooking room and a libary. All teachers have some relation with the international schools and are certificated with CPI, CPR, First Aid and counceling. It's worth checking it out. Their homepage address is www.js-international-school.com

Hi,

Has anyone had experience with Komazawa Park Pre-School? Do many of their kids go on to St Marys or the other international schools? Any comments on their curriculum? I'm concerned that my 5 year old who will have almost completed pre-school when we arrive in September will fall behind his Australian peers after having to restart pre-school in Japan.

All comments appreciated.

Pictures are up of the first term extracurricular programs at The Children's Garden International Preschool at the following website: www.grab-bag.net/news.
The spring camping trip was a wonderful success! We stayed for 2 days and 1 night in the mountains of Okutama, and had some amazing experiences. We saw a flying squirrel on our night hike, found snake skins, and learned that Konnyaku comes from a tree. We had a BBQ, ate S'mores and swam in the cool waters of the Nipparagawa. Kids and leaders alike had a great experience. The Children's Garden fall camping trip open to the public (ages 5 and up) is scheduled for the weekend of November 23 - 24.
The Bilingual Creative Drama course ended with a smashing performance of a story created and performed by the children attending the class. This was a cooperative production which involved the creation and then production of a story that the children created themselves. It was very fulfilling for the children, their parents, and the teachers and we look forward to another terrific performance in December!
The Children's Garden International School in Kichijoji is offering a 2 hour creative drama workshop open to the public on Saturday Oct. 5th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. The workshop will be conducted by a professional actor visiting from Australia who has visited such schools as Nishimachi, K International and Seisen.
Space is limited for both the camping trip and creative drama workshop so please contact us as soon as possible. for more information call (0422)20 -5055 or tcgjapan@yahoo.com.

Hello All,

We are planning to relocate to Tokyo. We have 6 years old, 4 years old and 2 years old. We have contacted Nishimachi International School and put
our daughter (6 years old) on the waiting list.

However, I have a feeling that it may take long time to have any openings at the school for her grade. Meanwhile, I am thinking to enroll her to a Jpanese public school or other international school in the same area. Have any of you sent your children to Kougai, Japanese public school at Hiroo?
Or other public or international schools near there? Could you tell me about your experiences?
And also, we would like to live in walking distance to the schools. Does anyone have any suggestions where is good place in Hiroo area for an American
family? I am going to Japan briefly in a few weeks to get some ideas about places to live and schooling.

I am Japanese American and our children understand Japanese quite well but not as good as their peers in Japan.

Thank you,

Liz

Liz,

We moved here from the states a month ago with a 20 month old daughter and a son who turned 4 last week. We live across the street from the Nichimachi school, but because my son missed the birthday cutoff date he will not be attending kindergarten for 2 more years. I have both of my kids enrolled at JAC Intl' Preschool, which is within walking distance toward Hiroo. We live in Moto-Azabu Hills (a highrise apartment complex) that we love, and it is within walking distance of both Hiroo and Azabu Juban station. I am not familiar with the Japanese schools, but am happy to help in any other way I can. Please feel free to contact me directly by email at heatherjapan@hotmail.com if I can help.

Regards,

Heather

We are planning to relocate to Tokyo from Hong Kong with our 3 year old daughter.
Since my husband would be working near Nakano, we would like to avoid long travel time and live near Nakano. But we want to look for a school for our daughter and then decide on place to live.
Please let me know about international schools in this area and if possible link to their site.
Thanks in advance

By Melissa Mcnulty on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 11:47 pm:

Hi Sonia,

If you are looking for an international preschool, there is one in Kichijoji (about 10 minutes by train from Nakano on the Chuo line). If you go to the Education in Japan-international preschools part of this forum, there is a link to the list of preschools in Tokyo. The one in Kichijoji is called Children's Garden International Preschool. Ellen Motohashi is the contact person. Contact details are listed.

By Sonia Verma on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 10:51 pm:

Thank you Melissa,

I`ll be getting in touch with this school.
Is there any Kindergarten near Nakano? Coz, we don`t want to be moving again after a year as I don`t see garden international having a kindergarten. We may like to settle for one good school where my daughter can continue for at least 2 years.

By Melissa Mcnulty on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 1:30 pm:

Hi Sonia,

Children's Garden is for kids aged from about three (a bit younger seems to be fine) up to about age eight (for some of their bilingual/drama programs), so it should cover the kindergarten arena. I've had a look at their curriculum for the day program, and it is a stimulating, fun and creative one. Lots of arts and crafts and music and dance type stuff. I've met the teachers, and know Ellen, and will be sending my daughter there once she's potty trained... Anyway, just wanted to clarify that for you!

As to other kindergartens in the area, I don't know of any other international ones, although there is a montessori preshool in Kichijoji (so probably also in Nakano), but it is Japanese. I know that ASIJ has a couple of preschools/kindergarten campuses. They will require some train travel. There are other preschools in central Tokyo. If you live in Nakano, the Chuo line has a lot of trains, including express trains, and Nakano is a major stop, so travel times will be less than if you lived on a smaller station area(the ride to Shinjuku, for example, will be about ten minutes or less. You can transfer to many lines from there). The main problem, really is that the lines do get very crowded.

Anyway, I'll keep my ear to the ground for you, and let you know if I hear of any other schools.

Good luck!
Melissa

By Natasha on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 5:22 pm:

What kind of school are you looking for? Japanese kindergartens are everywhere. IF you are looking for an international school then you need to think about things like how much money you can afford and applying early if possible because the preschool and K classes are in very high demand, etc. Some of them start at age 3, some start at 4 (if you are looking for many years of continuity at the same school). If you will only be in Tokyo for 2-3 years you might try a smaller school that only goes up to the last year of Kindergarten. Anyway there is a list for your research purposes at: http://www.tokyowithkids.com/fyi/international_schools.html

Here are some schools that are not far from Nakano (less than half an hour which would be a very reasonable commuting time for your husband if you decided to find housing close to the school).

New International School (Ikebukuro)
Willowbrook (Azabu)
Children's House Preschool (Meguro)
Yoyogi International Preschool/Kindergarten (Yoyogikoen/Harajuku)
etc.
Lot's of possibilities.

By Sonia Verma on Monday, October 21, 2002 - 12:12 pm:

Thank you Melissa and Natasha,
It was indeed very helpful. I have gone through the website of all the schools mentioned and I think I`ll narrow it down to New International schoold (ikebukro) and Children`s garden.
I agree with you Natasha with the cost of international education in Japan is very high, even as compared to Hong Kong. In hong Kong we are paying almost half of what we would be paying in Japan for the internal education and we are very happy with the quality of education my daughter is getting in Hong Kong.
This is very surprising, even if we add up some numbers for Japan being slightly more expensive than Hong Kong. But it can`t be twice as expensive as Hong Kong.
Seems to be a very lucrative business.
Anyway Thanks a lot for all your help.

We're planning to move to Tokyo in August and need some advice on finding a good (and hopefully inexpensive) pre-school for our older son who'll be three and a half in August. Are there any pre-schools that are natural "transition" schools for the more established kindergartens/elementary schools? We'll probably be living near Azabu/Hiroo, Yoyogi-koen or Denenchofu. Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, Sarina & Carmen
My 4-yr-old boy has just finished the Spring Program in Grace International Learning Center last Friday.(http://www.grace-learning.com) It was a wonderful week. Teachers are very friendly, they are not only qualified in teaching English but also child care (one of them are from Montessori). Highly recommended. As far as I Know, they are also taking enrollment from preschoolers. Located in Denentoshi-line, 10 mins walk from Futakotamagawa.

I am new to these discussions. I am having trouble creating a new topic so I am testing whether I can add to an existing one. We are planning a move to Tokyo. My son will need to complete kindergarten and first grade there but his Birthday is September 27th and I am told that the schools have a September 1 cutoff date. Does anyone know if this is true for all the schools?
Wendy

By Karyn Robson on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 5:35 am:

Wendy,
It depends on the school. Is your son already in school? My daughter had finished 2nd grade when we moved and continued into the third grade although her October birthday would have put her in the second grade here in Tokyo. I know of other children who were also allowed to begin K "early" because they were ready. You can also look at the New International School and The Montessori school of Tokyo which have multi-age grouping.

Hi Wendy, New International School (in Ikebukuro) has December 1 as the age cutoff. I think you need to just check with each school. There are many of them for pre-schoo/kindergarten. But the list narrows a lot starting in first grade.

I would like to put my 20 months old daughter in preschool or activity center where she can learn and be social with other kids. I live Hikawadai (On Yurakcho line, 4th station from Ikebukoro) So i am looking for a place at or around Ikebukoro.

Your response will be greatly appericiated.

Thanks

By Bethan Hutton on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 11:54 am:

Hi Shakiba,

The other week someone on this list recommended the Doremi Garden international preschool (for details see the list of international schools on this website - http://www.tokyowithkids.com/fyi/international_schools.html) which seems to be just a couple of stops away from you on the Yurakucho line near Ikebukuro.

Or you could try somewhere like the nursery my daughter goes to, Kids Plaza Asc in Minami Ikebukuro (about 3 mins walk from Higashi Ikebukuro station on the Yurakucho line). It is a basically a daycare place, but they take children on a regular or casual basis (ie you can choose a monthly contract, or just pay per hour for a few hours whenever you want) and they do lots of activities with the children, including some semi-formal "classes" in English, music etc. It is a Japanese establishment but there are quite a few non-Japanese kids there, and they have an English teacher who comes in a few times a week. Most of the staff don't speak any English, though. The phone number there is (03)5950 8351.

I note a number of the postings are looking for an AFFORDABLE International Preschool in the Hiroo/Azabu/Arisugawa area. I have recently enrolled my 3 year old in a new preschool called ACORN (www.acorn-school.com) conveniently located in Moto-Azabu. They have just opened so only have a handful of students. The premises are small but bright and happy and full of natural light. The ladies running the school are lovely and my son is learning lots as well as having heaps of fun with lots of indoor and outdoor play.

They are having a THANKSGIVING PARTY AND OPEN SCHOOL DAY next Friday 25 November. Check out their website for more details.

I am pleased we found the school as an affordable international preschool in Tokyo is a rare find!

By Wendy Chan on Saturday, February 18, 2006 - 7:07 pm:

My bigger girl was just confirmed to be accepted by American School (ELC) ... ooh ! But it's time now for looking a good preschool for my small girl (another project to do !).

As for the Tokyo International School mentioned by Cornelia, I did visit it in my January school search. I was told in a very direct way (I appreciated their honesty) that there's no hope at all to get into their 3 yr old and 4 year old classes as there's only one class for each year and the waiting list is long long long. The admission lady said the kindergarten class (5-6 years old) may have more chance for the school year 2007/08 as they will have 2 (or 3?) classes, ie. an excess of about 20 seats from the 4-5 year old class.

Barbara, you may want to try this out (but you have to be quick, they accept applications from September this year).

Cornelia, you mentioned that there are some small but seriously run preschools. I've seen J's, Ai, Rivendale, ABC, Willowbrooke. ABC have a long long waiting list though I like it most. I am not very happy with the school campus of Willowbrooke though sounds quite a lot of good comments. J's is unacceptable as the classroom for 2-3 years old is in a basement (!), ie. no sunlight at all and I have concerns on the ventilation. J's sound clean but the classroom for the 2-3 years old look like a babysitting room only. What other perschools would you recommend?

By Wendy Chan on Saturday, February 18, 2006 - 07:36 pm:
Sorry, I mixed J's and Ai in my last posting. It's Ai which place the 2-3 years old in the basement. J's environment is clean and quite some sunlight though the classroom is small.

By Suzanne on Sunday, February 19, 2006 - 7:34 am:

Wendy,
When did you visit Willowbrook? The school has just moved into a new beautiful building and I'm very happy with it. It's a great environment for kids.

My daughter has gone to Willowbrook for 2 years. We loved the school before, despite the old facilities, but now that we're in the new building we couldn't be
happier. It's an amazing school. The school is decorated with the kids art
projects, which are very creative.

There is also PAL International Preschool in Nishi-Azabu near Kougai Park. My neighbor sends her son there and is quite happy.

Suzanne

By Cornelia on Sunday, February 19, 2006 - 11:44 pm:

I've been in Tokyo for 15 years now, and I don't see things the same way any more. I've gotten used to the cheap buildings, florescent lighting, crammed offices, lack of central heating in housing, etc. I look for the sincerity of the staff and the smiles on the kids faces. Are they occupied? If they are crying are they being noticed and comforted, that sort of thing. I have not found one single school that fulfills my entire wish list anyway. There is always at least one compromise, usually several. Early childhood is really different from kindergarten. The littlest kids don't really play with each other. They do parallel play. I think this extends to the "teacher". The teacher provides the means for exploration and guidance, but the child does it alone essentially. If the child is uninterested in the designated task of the moment or distracted for some reason, they will simply not participate. The teacher's main interaction with that age group aside from providing new materials/activities every few minutes or so depending on the child's attention span, is to prevent accidents and keep the little ones from hurting themselves, do a lot of cleaning up after and finally provide comfort when something "goes wrong" such as when the paper falls to the floor, or "the scissor refuses to work right", etc. Also these kids are happy in smaller spaces because they feel safe. And it is much easier for the teacher to prevent accidents in a smaller space, because the kids are all closer at hand as opposed to out-of-reach. It does appear like baby-sitting sometimes, but providing the activities including those that start the kid into the field of interaction with others is key to keeping their minds stimulated and soaking up data.

I personally am inclined toward Montessori because I believe strongly in multi-age environments as very conducive to learning. I'm also inclined to dual language or total immersion in another language at that age, because decoding a second language is a super stimulant to that young and very powerful brain.

But cost, location, schedule, and so on also influence my decisions, so it really is a very personal process. I've visited J's and was impressed by the dedication of the owner and the head teacher. It's small, but adequate and they do not have so many children that it feels crowded. If they were located within walking distance, I would definitely keep them on my list. Delivery by car would be somewhat tedious because of the narrow street. It's not easy to decide in advance which compromises to make I suppose, but if the places with the long waiting lists are not even on the table, then it might be possible to wait until after arrival to make that decision. Some of the smaller schools even offer a free trial session to help the parents make their choices.

By Bunny on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 10:04 pm:

The nearest inertnational school is probably the American annex over near Ogikubo.

You can also take the bus to the British School.

The fees however, will make you wish you were an ex-pat with more money than sense.

You state your daughter is 3, so you probably want a pre-school. The Yoyogi International Prep-school might fit the bill, its on the bus route to shibuya.

Or you could try say, Housen at Nakano-sakaue. That would make 3 bilingual kids in the whole school. It has some issues higher up the years, but the yochien is quite excellent. I won't bother warning you about the mums there though, people will think I am being mean.

I'm new to this site and new to Japan. I need a preschool for my 2.5 year old a few hours a week. All the well-known international preschool prices are outrageous (I have to pay out of my own pocket). Any good, safe, and clean preschool type near Roppongi or Hiroo that's not so pricey?

I've already looked at the fees for J's, PAL, ABC, Willowbrook, Sommerhill, St. Albans, Mitsui, etc.
Any not so known but good reference will be very appreciated.

Thanks. Julie C.

By Edlyn on Friday, September 14, 2007 - 9:29 pm:

If you look back in this thread you will see a recommendation for ACORN in the Hiroo area as an affordable international preschool. The website was www.acorn-school.com. It was from 2005 and I don't know anything about the school but you might check it out.

The truth as I understand it is that all the international schools are about the same price and they are all quite high. You would do much better if you put your child in a private Japanese yochien but they generally start at the age of 3 (by April 1 when the school year begins). You will also need some help with the language if you don't speak Japanese but it will cost you about 28000 Yen a month. My daughter is in public yochien but that begins at age 4. The cost is only 5000 Yen but there is a lot of things to buy, so spent another 30000 or 40000 Yen at the beginning of the year.

Good Luck! We looked around ourself and actually absolutely love the Early Learning Center at Tokyo Union Church where my son attended summer camp but it was too expensive for us.

Dear Edlyn,
Thank you so much for your message. I love what see on their website and what previous members have written above. I will now contact the school and see if they have an opening. I can't believe it is so close to me, and yet nobody involved in my relocation has mentioned it.

We have recently opened an international school in Makuharihongo, Chiba. Our students range from 1.5 years to 8 years old.We also cater for after school students. All our classes are taught in English by qualified native English teachers. We group our students based on their English abilities rather than their age. There is a lack of credible English preschools in the Chiba/Tokyo area and we are trying to overcome this problem. I recommend that you take a look at our website at:

or phone us on 043-309-5887
