POTTERY MAKING WORKSHOP:
The workshop will enable you to make your own JAPANESE TEA BOWL using a manual wheel. Fee includes tuition and use of workshop facilities during class as well as clay, colors to choose and firing. The bowl will be ready for you after about 3 weeks.

We did the pottery workshop near Hon-Komagome station in September and it was a blast! However, it was a one time thing. It is possible to take classes there, but pretty much only on Thursdays from 19:00 - 21:00 which is hard to fit into the schedule on a school night what with homework, cooking dinner, etc.

My daughter brought home a bowl and a cup back a few weeks later (which had the bases thoughtfully finished by someone there, so these items all stack nicely with our other dishes). We use them all the time. I don't know of any pottery classes conducted in English, but you can learn a lot by watching carefully too!

There are also loads of potteries outside of Tokyo that allow people to come in and make things. Most of them will mail you the items after firing (at a cost). We had some fun at a place called:
Hisa Tokoubou: (http://www.hisatou.com/) in Kasama City on 2 April. We haven't gotten those items back yet, but we are waiting enthusiastically. We paid about Y1000 each for 800grams clay plus firing. We'll be picking them up so I don't know what the shipping cost would be. Here's a price list (though I can't read it myself): http://www.hisatou.com/hisatou020b.html. There were at least two other potteries on the same road that offered a similar experience. I think quite a few potteries do something of this sort.

I got my sushi plate, chopstick holders and soy sauce bowl back last week and they are great :)
It was kind of pottery-houdai as you just make what you want during the time :)
