By josie on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 - 11:12 am: After moving to Japan in February, I was shocked to at the tuitions for international preschools near our home in Denenchofu. Our son is three years old, and my husband's work will not cover his tuition until he is five. Rather than pay for what amounts to about USD10,000 for per year for ten hours a week of preschool out of our own pocket, I started to research alternatives. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered Kid's World. Not only do they offer a preschool program in English and Japanese for 10 or 15 hours a week, they also have drop off childcare for infants and toddlers, after-school programs, and art classes available for children up to elementary school age. The annual membership fee is JPY2000, and course fees vary with the age of the child and which program(s) are chosen. For example, our son is going to the international program three times a week from 10AM-2PM starting in September and the cost is JPY66,000 per month. Not cheap by US standards (we paid less for full time daycare in San Francisco when I was working), but relatively affordable. In addition, you can arrange for meals, for about JPY500, and menus are printed monthly. And a daily notebook is kept, so you know what type of activities your child participated in, what they ate, nap times, BMs, etc. Our son goes to Kids World Kakinozaka Nest located one minute from Toritsu Daigaku Sta. on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. But, Kids World centers are located all over the Tokyo metropolitan area. Each are managed separately. One of my friends told me that Kakinozaka Nest is better than the one at Futago-Tamagawa, so it best to go see the facility and ask questions. And lastly, Kids World is always looking for native English speakers to teach the children conversational English. According to the manager of our son's center, Kids World will even offer a discount on your child's tuition if you are employed with them. However, you will not be assigned to the same school as your child. Our son really enjoys his teachers, and his classmates, both Japanese and international, and always looks forward to going to school.
By Caterina Yajima on Sunday, May 26, 2002 - 1:34 am:Hello, Does someone know Kids World? My daughter is one year old and because I'm working it's necessary she stays in a kindergarden. In my city I found Kids' World and I thought it'll be interesting for her but there is a little problem. In Kids' world if you can not prepare lunch, kid eats meal from outside. The problem is: for one year old child is it too hard to eat meal cooked outside every day? Please give me any information about it! My address is: gioie@kt.rim.or.jp Thank you in advance.
By Cornelia on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - 5:02 pm:There are 28 Kids World locations throughout Japan but about 16 of those are in the Tokyo Area. I've never seen one myself but I know that Terry Zailan (the ex-director of Mz International Preschool and the current owner of Ayla International School) used to work for them and developed an international curriculum that they could use (though there were problems with it because they only had one foreign teacher in the whole company at the time). As for food, I figure they would know enough about little children to be able to get the right kind of food catered for them. After all they are a subsidiary of Pigeon, a baby products company. note from Admin: new web site link for Kids World (Feb 2008) http://pigeon.info/campaign/kidsworld/
