By May Ose on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 4:24 pm: can somebody tell me about this? and what should i know? i mean if i import something like goods etc. what are the requirements needed, fees and clearances need to be done thanks in advanced
By Yelena on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 10:04 pm: may i assume you mean "import" as in what you ship when you move to Japan? when we moved to japan, we shipped our things through a shipping/relocating company. there were no duties to pay for our things (including a few boxes of non- perishable food & household items), but we did have to pay tax on the wine: I believe it was 300yen per bottle, over the free limit of 3 bottles. as i recall there were other special items that could be taxed: rice. new electronics or furniture. i don't remember what else. hope that helps.
By Bethan Hutton on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 10:46 pm: If you are shipping things into Japan which are your personal effects, eg if you are moving house to Japan, you are meant to fill in a customs declaration when you arrive at Narita, using a form called "declaration of unaccompanied baggage", saying how many boxes and roughly what is in them, and this usually means you don't have to pay duty on the goods when they arrive. If you didn't fill in the form, it is possible you will be charged duty on some things, but you can probably get around this by doing a form letter of apology. One year I shipped some boxes of books, clothes etc back to Japan via UPS after a holiday in the UK, and forgot to do the unaccompanied baggage form, so ran into customs problems, but UPS gave me an apology letter to copy and send in, and after that everything went smoothly and I didn't have to pay duty.
