Japan With Kids - Forums: Health Topics: Health Insurance: Travel Health Insurance
By Karen on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 9:24 pm:

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced travel health insurance plan?

Last autumn while visiting Canada we (very unfortunately) ended up with over $2000 in emergency medical bills. We are still in the process of applying for a refund (we expect to get less than 10% back from National Health).

This time, I want to be covered by a plan that will actually reimburse me.

Can anyone recommend any good plans?

I am already familiar with Banner Japan's coverage found at:
https://www.imglobal.com/travelinsurance/

Thanks in advance!

Karen

Hey Karen,

I can't remember what the actual travel health insurance company was but I got it from NO 1 Travel in Shibuya, I took a 10 day plan and I made a huge claim after travelling in Thailand and they paid it all back in less than 3 weeks of comming back to Japan, straight into the account with no questions asked or any hassle at all.

So if you go and ask NO 1 Travel, they used to have the insurance brochure on the desk when you walk in the door. Hopefully you can find something reasonable.

Good luck
Steph

I have bought travel insurance quite a few times now directly at Narita Airport. There are about 4 companies to choose from with staff during normal business hours and then there are also automatic machines for about 7 or so companies where you can buy insurance even after normal business hours.

I can't use those machines by myself, but I did sucessfully enlist the aid of the person at the help desk located just after passing through immigration in Novemeber 2002.

I have used Tokyo Marine several times and two other companies (the names I don't remember). Only once I made claim (Tokyo Marine) and it was paid even though I did not have all "original" receipts (it was a small claim under Y20,000), so I think the "bent" the rule a bit after I explained on the telephone why the original receipt was missing for one item.

I included a bit about travel insurance at the Narita page on this web site at:

By the way, the insurance you buy at the airport, they have a family plan, is that what you are getting?

Narita Airport - Terminal 2
AIU Insurance Company - a member of American International Group (AIG)
30 June 2003: Mother (42) and daughter (6.5) for 2 months was about Y45,000 yen. They searched the passports carefully and required the numbers off the re-entry permits in order to complete the transactions. They also checked for the visa type (I think any type other than the 90 day temporary would qualify).

Inside, after going through immigration, there are machines to sell you insurance BUT the time limit is one month. For longer you must buy the insurance in the check-in lobby.

The last time I bought travel insurance it was for only a week and only for one adult, and I did it inside at a machine with help from the lady at the information desk. I don't remember the company or the cost.
