Does anyone know details on how to get a term life insurance policy (to provide for a child if the parent(s) pass away)?

By Natalie on Thursday, August 3, 2000 - 11:55 am:

My husband and I recently signed up with an American insurance company Trans America Life which has an office here in Tokyo. The policy is in US dollars. Contact Steve Hashimoto at 03-5532-8070.

A coincidence! I got my term life insurance on a trip home during the summer AND TransAmerica Life (the famous pyramid building in downtown San Francisco) was the only company that would give me a policy for more than $100,000, while residing abroad. I didn't know they had an office in Tokyo. Do they also have a nurse that visits you at your home of office for the necessary check up prior to issuing the policy (including urine and blood samples)? I just recommended to one girlfriend to pick up her policy while on summer vacation in the USA because of the physical exam requirement for policies with higher benefits.
In the USA call:
1-800-327-2866 or 1-512-345-9500 and fax: 1-512-345-8498.

Today a 37 year old female (healthy, non-smoking, not obese) can get a $300,000 term life 20 year fixed annual premium policy for $388 USD per year.

A 40 year old female (healthy, non-smoking, not obese) can get a $300,000 term life 20 year fixed annual premium policy for $448 USD per year.

Translated into yen, I don't know how this compares with competitive products in Japan.

At the time (in 1997), I researched about 6 major companies including USAA (which would go no higher than $100,000). If anyone knows of other companies that since then may have started issuing policies to US citizens with foreign residency in Japan, please let us know!

Hello,
I just read your post at above and I was wondering if you also sell any disability insurance products or know someone who does?
Sincerely, Cornelia

Does anyone know who the new Transamerica life insurance rep is in Tokyo. Apparently Steve Hashimoto mentioned above is not longer doing it?

By Natalie B on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

I just talked to Steve this morning and he is still the rep for TransAmerica. He handles all types of insurance coverage from life, property/casualty (incl house) and auto.
His contact info has changed;

This response is a good two-years late, but the best Disability Insurance that I have been able to find is the Global Income Protection Plan offered by William Russell.

Thank you very much Natalie and Michael! If anyone knows any other reps that sell insurance products that I should research with, I'd appreciate contact info.

If you are a Lutheran and a USA citizen, you can get a variety of reputable and very competitively priced insurance products through Thrizent (formerly "Aid Association for Lutherans" in the USA): http://www.thrivent.com/aboutus/history
